May 29, 2025NPP-USA Michigan Chapter welcomes Mr. Kofi Tonto, Political Aide to Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
T he NPP-USA Michigan Chapter hosted Mr. Kofi Tonto, political aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, during a special meeting held in Farmington Hills, Michigan, USA. Chairman Seth Gyamfi welcomed Mr. Tonto and thanked him, along with all chapter members, for their continued support and dedication to the party.
Mr. Tonto conveyed a thank you message from Dr. Bawumia, recognizing the chapter’s efforts during the just-ended election. He also shared updates on the current affairs of the party in Ghana, including discussions about proposed party constitutional reforms. Mr. Tonto shared light on some factors that he believes contributed to the party’s electoral defeat, such as public dissatisfaction over the lack of cabinet reshuffling, the imposition of new taxes (betting tax, e-levy), and general frustrations with leadership responsiveness, etc.
He encouraged members not to lose hope but to continue supporting the party’s rebuilding efforts. During an open forum, chapter members expressed additional concerns, including:
- The need for a change in the delegate system to make it more representative.
- Concerns that the President has too much broad authority to make decisions without party checks, and a call for reforms to ensure presidential accountability within the party structure.
- Appeals for presidential hopefuls to unite and avoid actions that could cause further divisiveness within the party as it regroups.
Chairman Gyamfi concluded by reaffirming the chapter’s unwavering commitment to the NPP and urged Mr. Tonto to inform the national leadership that party officials visiting the U.S. should extend their outreach beyond New York and Washington, D.C., to include Detroit, Michigan, and other active chapters.
The meeting ended with renewed energy and determination to support the party’s growth and future success.
